VMFA’s Grounded Exhibition Opens at RIC

RICHMOND, Virginia (August 1, 2016)

An exhibition of paintings by Virginia-based artist Leigh Anne Chambers, called “Grounded,” opens today at Richmond International Airport (RIC). The show will be on view in the first level of the terminal through February 2017.

In her studio practice, Chambers considers social ordering—or how a society determines what is tasteful—while engaging domestic materials to challenge traditional notions of art. She alters familiar household items like vinyl flooring and carpets and uses them for both practical and formal purposes and modifies them in the attempt to derive meaning.

“With her dripped paint on faux-marble linoleum, Leigh Anne Chambers puts her finger on the nexus between decoration, popular culture, the still-present urge for authenticity, as well as the absorption of abstraction into mainstream culture,” said Vittorio Colaizzi, assistant professor of art history at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia

Chambers lives in Courtland, Virginia, where she serves as the executive director of Rawls Museum Arts and is the recipient of a 2016 VMFA Professional Fellowship in Painting.

2015 marked the 75th anniversary of VMFA’s Fellowship Program. This exhibition is a celebration not only of this landmark but also a celebration of this selected VMFA fellow who has made impressive contributions to the arts in Virginia.
