VMFA’s The Invisible Yoke, Volume III: The Seven Cities Photos Exhibition Opens At Richmond International Airport

An exhibition of photographs by Virginia-based artist Matt Eich, called “The Invisible Yoke, Volume III: The Seven Cities Photos,” opens today at Richmond International Airport (RIC). The show will be on view in the first level of the terminal through January 2018.Eich photographs his family, his circle of friends, and even total strangers. They are unknown to us as viewers, yet we relate to them. This may be surprising at first, but it is precisely what Eich is after. It is less the person than the moment that lets us into his work, but we soon ally with strangers we will never meet and find we have experienced a parallel moment. These images are from Eich’s series The Seven Cities, set in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia where the artist spent his childhood.

Eich now lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his family while working on longform photographic essays about family, community, and the American condition. He is the recipient of a 2017 VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship, among numerous other grants, fellowships, and recognitions.

2015 marked the 75th anniversary of VMFA’s Fellowship Program. This exhibition is a celebration not only of this landmark but also a celebration of this selected VMFA fellow who has made impressive contributions to the arts in Virginia.
